Frequently
Asked Questions:
Microvision Bluetooth/Tethered Barcode Scanner FAQ’s:
Q: My USB Cable stopped communicating with my computer, and is NOT recognized?
A: If an exclamation appears next to the cable name then you have a problem (probably a Code 10 error). This rare problem is a cable startup error that seems to have been caused by a Windows update. Symptoms of this problem are:
- The computer boots with the cable connected but the cable does not start.
- The computer is booted with the cable disconnected, you connect the cable, and the cable does not start.
- The error is cleared if the cable is unconnected and reconnected when the computer is running.
To resolve this problem you need to uninstall and reinstall the cable drivers:
1. Press Start button > Settings > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs.
2. Select “ROV Scanner Driver”* and press the Change/Remove button and press the Finish button when prompted.
3. Reinstall the USB cable driver.
From this point forward the cable should work properly. This problem occurs when the USB cable driver is loaded and then the Windows update is applied. If you are installing the cable and driver then you should never experience this problem.
Q: How do I diagnose any issues with my ROV Scanner, and possible ports?
A: You can diagnose other communications problems by following these steps:
1. Select Start > Settings > Control Panel > System or right-click on My Computer from the Windows Desktop and select Properties.
2. In the Device Manager select the Hardware tab and then press the Device Manager button.
3. Expand Ports (COM & LPT) and make sure the cable switch is set on VCOMM. Connect the cable and you should see a line that reads Microvision ROV USB Interface (COMx), where x is the number of the virtual COM port. If you disconnect the cable then this line should disappear. If this line does not appear then try reloading the USB cable driver.
Q: How do I Auto or Manual Download the Scans in Memory?
A: Your application can require the user to initiate a download (manual download) or it can trigger a download after the scanner is connected to the host computer (auto-download). The scanner also sends an attention packet to the host when the scanner is connected to the cable. A host application can listen for this attention and immediately request a download or it can require the user to manually initiate the download.
Auto Download
With Auto-Download, the scanner sends an attention packet when the cable is connected, and the application then sends a download request to the scanner to initiate the download. The scanner data is not cleared until the SDK downloads and verifies the data. From the perspective of the user, the scanner is connected and the data is immediately sent. You must set Auto-Download to true to make the scanner send the attention when the cable is connected.
Manual Download
With Manual Download, the host initiates the download by sending a download request to the scanner. The host normally has a button or some other way for the user to initiate a download. The user connects the scanner cable, initiates the download, and then the host clears the data. For manual download you can set the set Auto-Download to either true or false. If you set Auto-Download to true then you can detect when the scanner is connected (an attention packet is sent). If Auto-Download is false then the scanner will not send an attention packet when connected.
Which Mode to Use?
Now for the big decision, that is, which mode to use. Some users prefer auto download and others prefer manual download. In general, we find that users in office or retail environments prefer auto download and the more industrial users (warehouse workers, forklift operators, etc.) prefer manual download.
